Story Behind the Song
I recorded both the guitar and viola parts on my PC. This song has been one of the most popular songs I have written and performed. It captures a bittersweet moment of both forgiveness and joy when Mary Magdalene anoints Jesus' feet with her own tears and perfume and washes them with her hair.
Lyrics
Magdalena smiles
as the tears roll down her face;
Hanging on to every word He said.
Teardrops mingle sweetly
with the perfume from an
Alabaster bottle poured out at Jesus’ feet,
as Magdalena smiles.
Around the table,
Disciples shake their heads.
Her reputation from the street had spread.
But repentance permeates the perfumed air,
and forgiveness overcomes
the awkward stares.
Refrain:
Magdalena smiles so bittersweet,
Pouring out her love at Jesus’ feet,
His forgiveness so complete,
Makes Magdalena smile.
Her simple act of love laid bare,
Washing His feet with her own hair,
Tears of joy applied with care,
as Magdalena smiles.
Magdalena smiles,
as she slowly lifts her eyes,
and recognition wipes her tears away.
for standing in the morning light,
Her beloved friend is holding out
His nail-scarred hands
and whispering her name.
so Magdalena smiles.
Around the table,
Disciples shake their heads,
“I saw the Lord. He lives and is not dead!“
He soon appears and eats with them a while,
Just like the first time they saw
Her tender smile.
