This is a gentle, reflective song. I wrote it in response to seeing a reproduction of Michaelangelo's "Pieta" while waiting for a bus. |

Story Behind the Song
The song makes reference to 2 themes commonly found in Christian art -- Mary and Jesus both at His birth and death.
Lyrics
Mary, hold your baby,
hold Him tight.
The love for all the world we know
is cradled in your gentle arms –
Tonight the angels’ comfort
give you sight.
The mysteries you ponder here
will fade to joy
within His light.
And pictured in the paint I see
a portrait of Nativity.
I see the stars, His halo bright,
a silhouette of diety;
and I wonder if you knew then
what would be?
His gift of love
for all humanity.
Mary, hold your baby,
hold Him tight.
The hope for all the world we know
is lying lifeless in your arms –
Tonight the angels’ comfort
give you sight.
The silent grief you hold so dear
will fade to joy
within His light.
And rendered in the stone I see
the teardrops of His misery,
I see His side, His hands and feet,
His sacrifice of love for me;
and I wonder if you knew
what had to be?
His sacrifice for all the world to see.
The gift of love He gave to you and me.
