Story Behind the Song
Bug Song took about two weeks to write - the main guitar riff was recycled from an old ballad from 'The Eventual Eclipse', our first demo-tape. It's an up tempo, played backwards, sort of version, which bares no resemblance to the song it comes from!
Lyrically it's an angst-filled look at our working lives and the things we have to do and people we have to put up with to keep Rome Burns going.
It took about 4 hours to record in 2 or 3 takes
Lyrics
In a sweat-stained bedsit somewhere in Europe,
A man awakes from fitful dreams,
Hazards a look at his office-bound life,
Gazes in the mirror and screams.
No-one wants to loose their humanity,
We all mutate as age encroaches,
Some grow wings, pincers or stings,
But the mass remain as roaches.
Chorus..
Bug people are beneath you,
Bug people are below,
Bug people have no purpose,
They just scurry to and fro.
I remember the liberty of childhood,
I used to enjoy such freedom and fun,
I used to catch those ugly bug folk,
And pull their limbs off one by one.
I didn't wanna be a civil servant,
I didn't wanna be a corporate slave,
I wasn't gonna curb my wayward thinking,
I would not behave.
Chorus...
I don't wanna be Mr Anonymous,
I don't wanna serve another dictator,
I wanna incite insects to riot,
I wanna be a bug exterminator.
Bugs - need to be taught a lesson,
They're infesting every hall,
They bit and stung and lived among us,
Bugs are having a ball.
Chorus...
My friends are starting to bug me,
My folks are starting to bug me,
A shadow passes above me,
And creatures crawl below...
Chorus...
