Story Behind the Song
The song came from the cosmic collision of a riff, a lead and a lyric. It came together over a couple month period in the fall of 2002. The riff was introduced at a rehearsal, a lyric was matched to the riff, and over the next several sessions the song came alive. The lyric is a message to the kids of a 44 year old rocker. The message is to take risks, do not live in a box, the box in which your parents and others confine you. Do not do irresponsible things, take charge of your life, and live. You only come this way once.
The recording occurred between Christmas 2002 and New Years 2003. One take and the basics were recorded. Additional recording sessions added dimension and made the song come alive.
Lyrics
Don t Always Do What I Say
I sit here and wonder what to give my kids
Benefits of all the mistakes I have made
Comfort them, things will be all right, so live
Share time so they remember me fondly
There are times to follow the rules
Then there's are times to Break em
Times to be a Saint
Then there's times to fake em
I was the one that always listened and followed the rules
I suggest you play outside the box
Do not always confine yourself, that s for fools
(and for sure) Don t always listen to what I say
Be someone that defines the path you take
Do not be molded by what others think
Don t look back or regret the life you make
Don t always do what I say
