Story Behind the Song
This came about rather by accident three years ago. I was fooling around with a few chord progressions on the black keys (which is why this piece is in C# major--mostly black keys). Those few chords were the genesis of "Hotter Than Hades." They can be heard in the rag's primary theme in the A strain.
The title? Well, it didn't come about as easily. After rejecting "Ridin' The Black Keys" as too similar to the titles of other such pieces, and "The Piano's Too Hot!" as a little too cute, I came upon a compromise with "Hotter Than Hades!" which suggests one has to go over the keys quickly, because they're "too hot to handle!" Perfect for the fast pace of the piece. This is a tribute, in a sense, to the fast, chaotic ragtime style of Eubie Blake, whom I've long admired.
