Story Behind the Song
Gentle, bittersweet love story of a husband and wife (and their kids) before, during, and after the towers fell On 9-11.
Lyrics
ON 9-11 (a love story)
She heard the alarm clock ring.
He turned it off and pulled her close.
The date said: 9-11 . . .
He left her for the shower,
and she suddenly felt cold,
she woke the children.
"Kids, get up!" she heard him call.
"Oh, Daddy! Finish last night's story of Heaven!"
"I'll tell you more when I get home tonight," he laughed,
"Be good, it's half past seven."
chorus:
A picture-perfect day,
as life goes on its way.
We better count our blessins'
while we have 'em.
For once upon a time
the bad things happen,
even here,
America, On 9-11.
He touched his lips to hers, 'n touched her hair,
'n their eyes met and they were shinin'.
The children laughed an' grabbed their bags.
She walked 'em out to catch the school bus waitin'.
He drove out to the train that took 'im to the tube,
that took 'im to the elevator climbin'.
And high atop New York he looked outside
an' thanked the Lord, eye to eye, in Heaven.
(chorus)
"I better start my work," he said,
an' walked away, but somethin' happened.
A giant boom, a shakin', fire 'n smoke,
he dialed her up amid the screamin'.
"Babe, there's been a plane, I know it's crazy,
don't be scared, I'm comin' down now!"
"I saw it on TV," she cried, "But there were two!"
The other tower exploded.
chorus:
A picture-perfect day,
that never goes away,
the day her and her babies'
hearts were broken.
For once upon a time
the bad things happen,
even here,
America, On 9-11.
"I love you an' the kids, I'll make it home.
Whatever happens you keep livin.
And Bobby's got his game tonight,
and Mary's scared of gettin' her first fillin'.
"Now I gotta help these folks -- " "Don't go!" she cried.
"Oh, Babe, some poor gal's burnin!"
With a kiss he said "G'bye," then, "Folks, stay calm!"
That's the last she ever heard him.
chorus:
A picture-perfect day
that never goes away,
when every good heart
in the world was broken.
But God, our lost ones' love,
'n times they gave us
make us strong.
So we fight on,
Right here,
America!
On 9-11.
