Ride combines Pink Floyd's cerebral word chains, Led Zeppelin's complex song structures, Ben Fold's piano, jazzy undertones, and Chris Cornell's (Soundgarden) inflections. As with many songs on "Black of a Friday Night", Solitary Street's debut CD, Ride's intimate and immediate sound appeals directly to you; the song is a couple of notches more interesting than the current alternative/progressive mainstream and it makes the song a rewarding experience. The recording itself is crisp and well balanced if only a little bit heavy on the reverb. |

Story Behind the Song
Written on a train from Albany, NY to Penn Station in Manhattan, Ride is a pensive exploration of how the repetition of unfullfing, false, and ordinary experiences can drain a soul.
Lyrics
platform four and the clouds are threatening to spoil another wait for the train / i wish they'd threaten so fierce that they'd drive me away / it's just that i'm so tired that i can't sleep today / and i can't stop thinking that someday this ride'll make me deranged / too fast to see the landscape / getting tired of watching / wanna get me off this thing before this thing kills me? / march out of the station and i shrug with a sigh / the shimmer of seventh isn't much of a sight--just a different kind of train a million stories high / just as rigid, just as safe / and so damn huge that i'm sure to lose / and just as contrived one for all and all for one / don't know where i've gone / and now another day, another rain, another station / different type of train, but still the same / and the ache in my chest makes me think this is the end / but not before the conductor man takes my ticket again
