Story Behind the Song
Brown Leather Jacket (B.L.J) was written at about the same time as Sunshine Fading Snow during December 2001. The lyrics of the song were written by Arran and expressed the frustration of having Robert in the band. It is written from Roberts perspective of the world expressing his ambitions and hates.
The name of the song was inspired by Robert's brown leather jacket which gave him an image of style which didn't agree with the rest of the band. The main guitar lead and rhythm parts were developed by Ross while Arran designed the keyboard and vocal parts.
Arran: "I remember, Ross came up with this riff which I thought needed a bass line, I thought refreshing change would be to have a low weird funky keyboard line instead of the normal bass line."
Lyrics
Think I'll go out tonight Maybe,
Look at the people in the street,
I'm gonna sit in my usual place,
By the window to stare in to space.
What shall I do with my life?
Maybe it's all a worthwhile fight.
Now the future holds hope for me,
Fame fortune a chance to be free.
Life's just one long sterotype,
Forceful fashion musical hype,
My minds tollerant and full of thought,
while words are putrid coming from your jaws
What shall I do with my life?
Maybe it's all a worthwhile fight.
Now the future holds hope for me,
Fame fortune a chance to be free.
I'm great, safe and free, look at me,
don't believe me here's my degree,
My perspective is warped and frayed,
Just like the strangest songs I've played.
What shall I do with my life?
Maybe it's all a worthwhile fight.
Now the future holds hope for me,
Fame fortune a chance to be free.
