Story Behind the Song
When my father was in the hospital, all seven of my brothers & sisters traveled hundreds of miles to come home. It was a horrible time for me. My dad was dying, internal battles raged, and to top it all off, I was struggling to keep my music career from an impending “crash & burn.” While all of this was went on, my mom cooked and cleaned for everyone while her husband lay unconscious, slowly fading away. It wasn’t until I realized that I only saw my family out of necessity that I wrote this. It’s about leaving things unsettled.
Lyrics
The Church
Momma, she’s in the kitchen, and daddy’s in the field
Momma, she’s in the kitchen, and daddy’s in the field
Momma, tell daddy to come home
whoa, I said momma, tell daddy to come home
Momma, She done left me, and daddy, I don’t think I’ll ever know
Momma, She done left me, and my daddy, I don’t think I’ll ever know
I said momma, what’s become of me, I don’t know
I said momma tell me what will become, cuz’ I don’t know
Weddings and funerals are the only time that people get together
Weddings and funerals are the only time, that people love one another
And it starts and it all ends, at the church
And it start’s and it all ends at the church
