This is a song I wrote in my senior year of high school for a peace studies class taught by renowned peace activist and former Washington Post columinst Colman McCarthy. Great class, great guy. Check out his Center For Teaching Peace in DC.

    Lyrics
You tell me not to forget the victim's story
Well excuse me if I just sound boring
But your blatant hypocrisy is bothering me
On this country's currency In God We Trust is what we read
but I don't see how God could advocate such violence
We got to put this barbarism behind us now.

So let's kill the death penalty
    and save humanity
    kill the death penalty
    stop the insanity

    your obsession with retribution
    leaves no room for redemption
    leaves no chance for forgiving
blinded by your hate you can't think great
    and eye for an eye
a killing for for a killing
    a death for a death
is not the way to go

So stop the executions Stop the Murderings
    Abolish This unncessary suffering
we kill the poor who can't afford to pay a decent lawyer
with no defense they got no chance their innocence will falter

Arbitrary and Inconsistent is the system that applies the death penalty
with no sure way to ensure fairness
it doeson't work why can't you see
instead of focusing on punitive justice
we need to work some more on restorative justice
or even better yet some preventative justice
the system we have now is far from justice

so why don't you realize that there's no need to support the ways of violence
you've heard it before and yeah i'll tell you again that life is the most precious thing in this world.
