Story Behind the Song
It's about my youth on the bayous of Michigan. Well, they don't call them that there, but it is a very swampy area in Western Michigan where the wind blows sand upin dunes which bottle up the rivers and creeks into bayou-like areas. No Alligators, but we had alligator snapping turtles!
Lyrics
Glad You Come To Visit (on the old bayou)
© Marc Bristol BMI
I used to play in the woods by the sassafras tree
Chasedfrogs in the swamp, couldnât let âem be
Grandpaâd say âcome a fishinâ with meâ
Weâd jump in the jeep and we was dirt road free
Paddle down the river in my uncleâs canoe
Never have trouble findinâ somethinâ to do
You got me, and I got you
Glad you come to visit on the olâ bayou
Now me and my cousin like to swim in the lake
Find a little driftwood, what could we make
A little baseball, some of Grannyâs pancakes
Chasinâ them squirrels and a catchinâ them snakes
Paddle down the river in my uncleâs canoe
Never have trouble findinâ somethinâ to do
You got me, and I got you
Glad you come to visit on the olâ bayou
Pickinâ berries in the field, tomatoes from the vine
Eatinâ them catfishes sure tastes fine
You got yours, and I got mine
Sittinâ on the porch in the warm sunshine
Paddle down the river in my uncleâs canoe
Never have trouble findinâ somethinâ to do
You got me, and I got you
Glad you come to visit on the olâ bayou
