    Story Behind the Song
This song is about what experiences are lost when someone dies.
In this song, a grandmother dies, and she is the last person to remember
a train wreck that happened in her youth.

    Lyrics
In the back of Grandma’s bible lists the children that she bore.
She had postcards from Paris in a tin box beneath the floor.
An old 78 record, it’s grooves were scratched and scored
With the song of a train wreck, silent here for evermore.

In a box in the basement is a suit that Grandpa wore.
There’s a receipt still in his pocket dated 1944.
There’s a picture of a sailor in Grandma’s chest of drawers.
He sang the song of a train wreck, silent here for evermore.

It was a night built for lovers as a silo’s built for grain.
They held tight to each other was they listened for the rain.
They heard a whistle from the distance and they always did recall
The sound of the train wreck. Now it makes no sound at all.

In a poster from a circus that never came to town,
I imagine I see teardrops in the makeup of the clown.
Does he cry with real emotion from a song he can’t ignore?
Like the song of a train wreck, silently here for evermore.
