Setup:
Lansford Hastings was a very egotisitical man who traveled a part of the Oregon trail to California. He wrote a book about this new route to California and was trying to ‘hawk’ his book to the new emigrants moving out west for free land. The route he wrote of is the one that got the Donner party trapped at the foot of the Sierra mountains. He didn’t go on his route in the winter months, and this, partly is the reason he was blamed for the downfall of the party. James Reed was impressed that Hasting’s was the only one that actually wrote a book, so he decided to take his route. Here, Lansford is hawking his book to the crowd in Springfield. |
