Story Behind the Song
It was penned September 11th, 2001, two days after the twin towers fell. I was sitting in front of the TV listening to the traumatic stories on the news. These stories were the inspiration for the whole last verse of "Remember Me" because they touched my heart so deeply. I felt so proud to be a member of a country where men and women could sacrifice all, for someone they didn't even know. I wrote the first verse, last, based upon that premise...thinking of all the young soldiers from our historical wars that died for us so we may be free today. Born of love and patriotism, this song just seemed to write itself.
Lyrics
Remember Me
Words and Music: Rick Roark
Indian Records Publishing, BMI © 2001
I fought the Red Coats on the Jersey shore
remember me
I was a Yankee in the Civil War
remember me
I was a private in World War One
I was forgotten in Vietnam
from Pearl Harbor to Desert Storm, ~Iraqi Freedom~
remember me
remember me
I was the one
remember me
1 my fathers son, 2 my mothers son, 3 my countrys son
I tasted life when I was around
remember me
the sweet smell of a summers rain
snow on the ground that melts in the spring
all the simple little things
fill my memory
the morning sun and the moon at night
falling in love for the very first time
my mothers heart
and my fathers pride
I take with me
~chorus~
sixty one floors and Lord, Im tired
remember me
just give me a chance and Ill fight this fire
remember me
were climbing up there to get them out
with smoke so thick that I cant see now
Lord, I think these walls are coming down
coming down on me
I close my eyes and I see my wife
our unborn child she has inside
if I could hold them just one more time
~chorus~
