Story Behind the Song
Always a showstopper live, this is an early song that George and I wrote. George came in with these great lyrics already done and I put the music to it. The original lyric sheet came in with the title "American Girl," despite the fact we were both aware of Tom Petty's song of the same title. But the lyrics were just to good to set aside, so we tacked an "An" onto the front of the title. We were amazed to be able to get Ronnie Montrose for the lead guitar on the recording. To this day, the first question people ask us when they meet us is "how did you get Montrose?" All I can think to say is that we were just very lucky. Thanks, Ronnie!
Lyrics
AN AMERICAN GIRL
When you were young,
life was so much easier then.
You didn t have worry,
About the rent, about your job.
Just wait by the phone for boys to call...
It s a carefree life when you are small.
American Girl, you've grown up now.
Things are not the way
you dreamed they would be.
American Girl, on your own now.
American Girl, inside a changing world.
When you were in school,
college was so easy for you.
Just cram for exams,
and spend the money Daddy sends you.
Every Sunday night your folks would call...
It's a carefree life when you are small.
American Girl, you've grown up now.
Things are not the way
you dreamed they would be.
American Girl, on your own now.
American Girl, inside a changing world.
Now that you're older,
on your own with kids to feed now.
You worry and hope for,
a better life for your daughter.
You wait by the phone for her to call...
It s a carefree life when you are small.
American Girl, you've grown up now.
Things are not the way
you dreamed they would be.
American Girl, on your own now.
American Girl, inside a changing world.
