Story Behind the Song
George walked in one day with the music and the concept. We pulled out some volumes on the Trojan War to make sure that any mythological and/or historical details would be correct. Then it was just a matter of trying to achieve the most lyrical economy without sacrificing impact. It’s a challenge to try and present a complex character like Cassandra within the confines of a popular song format. I think it came out pretty good.
Lyrics
POEM FOR CASSANDRA
Oh Cassandra,
worry not about tomorrow
lest today would pass you by.
Oh Cassandra,
think thee not about the sorrow
or what portent dreams may signify.
Cry out, cry out
and spread the warning.
In the dark of night,
you've seen the morning.
Oh let it not be in vain.
Oh Cassandra,
ten sanguine years behind us,
the time has come to celebrate.
Oh Cassandra,
now that peace has come to find us,
Athena s gift shall guide our fate.
Cry out, cry out
and spread the warning.
In the dark of night,
you've seen the morning.
Oh let it not be in vain.
Oh Cassandra,
to tempt the gods was your decision:
Apollo sought to open up your eyes.
Oh Cassandra,
still tormented by the vision,
and Ilium soon to realize.
Cry out, cry out
and spread the warning.
In the dark of night,
you've seen the morning.
Oh let it not be in vain.
