Story Behind the Song
No real story behind this song itself...the two refrains came to me first, and I just wrote the rest of the song around them. It's not about any particular person (except maybe the line about the girl who won't own up to her mistakes). I wanted the recording to have a cool kinda twangy beat sound with maybe a hint of folk, like the first wave of San Francisco rock bands (Beau Brummels, Vejatables, etc.) but at first I couldn't get quite the sound I wanted. But then I added reverb to the whole recording, and that brought the desired ambience. (I love reverb, in case that's not obvious). Now I think it sounds like something recorded for Love's 'Da Capo' album. (Yeah, I know that's LA and not San Fran.)
Lyrics
Don't call me, wait and see
Don't call me, wait and see
So you wanna throw my lovin'
All away 'til you have nothin'
Empty handed, empty hearted, oh
I think you're needing to learn something
I think you've got a lesson coming
One of right and wrong, cos you don't know
But I won't be around to teach it to you, baby doll, no
I know what I can stand but it's too late to start again
Cos I love you, but that's not the way it should be
I love you, but that's not the way it should be
Not that I think this will make you
Ever see it's your mistake, You
Never think it's you, but that's not so
And how I tried so very hard to wait you out each time, girl
You're so far past the line I have no choice but to stay behind
Cos I love you, but that's not the way it should be
I love you, but that's not the way it should be
And how I tried so very hard to wait you out each time, girl
You're so far past the line I have no choice but to stay behind
Cos I love you, but that's not the way it should be
I love you, but that's not the way it should be
I love you, but that's not the way it should be
I love you, but that's not the way it should be
Don't call me, wait and see
Don't call me, wait and see (repeat and fade)
