	Story Behind the Song I wrote this song after getting off the phone with an aquaintance. He'd enlisted in the military without thinking and then became more and more depressed as he realized America was going to war. He was leaving for Saudi Arabia the next morning, and on the phone I told him we'd have a party for him when he got back. All he said was, "If I get back." Lyrics There's nothing louder than the sound of the click on the other line It resonates heavily in her ears and she says, Well, that was goodbye. Got his finger on the trigger and he tries to want to fight He remembers singing the papers but he doesn't remember why Chorus: Lay down, lay down There's nothing left to lose Fell the weight of ruined lives And the fears you can't refuse Lay down, lay down We'll never win this fight Too many of us want to run We know this isn't right Crowded round the TV, they all want to hear the news She says she doesn't understand how we'll manage not to lose The planes soar up above him as he closes his left eye And he asks his God to tell him how he'll manage not to die Chorus Bridge: And he may make it back To his mothers trembling arms And he may not be hurt But it doesnt mean he won't be scarred Running fast he sees a bloody face lying in the dying grass He wonders what it was that made him decide to be in this mess And he says, "There's nothing left, there's nothing left but the pain of moving on."
