Story Behind the Song
While laying in my bed in Williamsburg, where I had been for approximately 3 days, I started singing the lyrics to this song, then I got up and started playing the guitar along with the lyrics, and the song practically came out wholly in its entirety (?), which was such a relief.
Much later, I traded a hammond organ I had acquired from my downstairs neighbors in Jersey City (they were leaving in a hurry) for 10 or 15 hours of recording time at Cat and the Fiddle studio, with Nicola Stemmer, who is "very Swiss," as he likes to say.
Lyrics
It's about always and never
When will I ever
Ties that were severed
And running away
It's about being a Rock Star
And being whoyou really are
And meaning what you say
It's about play it from the heart
It's about finish what you start
It's about climb every mountain, yeah,
and drink from the fountain and
Go west, young man,
and I don't think I can
And I don't want to live
If living means getting out of bed
And I don't want to give
If giving means tearing out my heart
And rising from the dead
It's about trains of thought
and jumping off them
It's about moving on before it's time
It's about trying to remember
And trying to forget
And holding on to what is mine
It's about writing a song that no one hears
Playing it one time in between your ears
It's about falling off horses
And getting back on them
And giving into fears
Chorus
It's about wanting to look pretty
It's a bout being in this city
It's about promises I can't make
And sympathy I can't take
It's about rhyming
and timing
It's about faith and letting go
It's about falling off horses
And getting back on them
And giving into fears giving into fears
Chorus
