Story Behind the Song
The music was written by Chuck in early 1999, and Jamie dug through her notebooks to find a poem that fit it brilliantly; unfortunately, the poem was written on a piece of loose leaf, and was lost soon after arranging the song. Jamie was able to recover the first two verses and the chorus from memory, but the third verse was lost forever. Chuck wrote the third verse later on, attempting to match the mood and measure of Jamie's first two verses. Jamie's parts for the song were recorded early in 2001 before she moved to Toronto for school. Chuck stayed behind in Alberta, finishing up the recording before reuniting with Jamie early in 2002. The hissing and warbling is due to the guitars being playing through some ancient ratty amps. Rochelle Wiskerke plays bass and sings harmonies, and Trevor Gervais plays lead guitar. We experimented with drums for this song, but the track sounded out of time and just all around bad so we left it out.
Lyrics
I was in a field lying, dreaming
That you were here too with me feeling
Kissing my lips, yours were like sugar
And we'll roll in the grass
We are the summer, we are the summer
Please I want you to feel what I feel
Dream to be alone
'Cause we are real
We are real
Real
I'm blowing you kisses from dandelion seeds
I'll see them land, kissing your knees
I'm in the background waiting for something
Oh we're building a nest
We are the summer, we are the summer
Please I want you to feel what I feel
Dream to be alone
'Cause we are real
We are real
Real
I look up to you from behind the clouds
You look up to me, I'm nowhere around
I'm all alone again beneath the trees
Dreaming of you
We are the summer, we are the summer
Please I want you to feel what I feel
Dream to be alone
'Cause we are real
We are real
Real
