Story Behind the Song
I wrote this whilst in shock like everybody else... The music was something I'd been noodling with just a few days before, the words written whilst I waited up for Stevie Wonder on "America: A Tribute to Heroes" (It was broadcast at 2am in the UK).
Believe: it can be a better place. Even now.
Lyrics
A minute's silence
I'll just call home,
And tell them I'll be dead,
Something's gone wrong, the world's gone wrong,
But me and these guys will knock it on the head.
We're going for the cockpit, we're going for their legs,
In a moment, in a big field, we'll bring this madness to an end.
To the ones I love,
Don't cry, don't weep
To the ones I leave,
Believe, believe
To the ones I love:
Fight this on your knees,
Then there'll be justice
And there will be peace
I'll just call Mum,
And tell her I'll be dead,
The aircraft is speeding, speeding towards me
And all my colleagues have fled.
My heart is breaking, I'm shaking with fright,
And all alone in a stairwell, all is suddenly light.
To the ones I love,
Don't cry, don't weep
To the ones I leave,
Believe, believe
To the ones I love:
Fight this on your knees,
Then there'll be justice
And there will be peace
As I race down, they race up,
As I scramble down, they march on up,
Fire fighting to free me,
And dying to leave me,
All they lived for.
To the ones I love,
Don't cry, don't weep
To the ones I leave,
Believe, believe
To the ones I love:
Fight this on your knees,
Then there'll be justice
And there will be peace
