Since this song was recorded in the eighties
South African Apartheid has crumbled
As an OFFICIAL "rule of law"
However, the term can be applied to a far
more insidious, because ingrained for centuries, way of looking at others - in Kosovo, and so many other troubling/bubbling-cauldron zones of conflict...that is why I keep it here
Like the song says:
The only cure for the will to WAR
IS the will to PEACE |
CD: Busker for FREEDOM
Label: Kolo
Credits: Jesse, guitar and vocals |
Story Behind the Song
My response to the eighties US conservative resistance to the effort to end apartheid in South Africa...and thoughts on how modern war is an idea...as Ralph Waldo Emerson said over one hundred years ago during the time of the US - Mexican War...war is not "human nature" it is an idea, as such it SHALL be replaced by a better idea...
Lyrics
(Chorus)
Now, it's business as usual back in the board rooms of the banks
Yes, it's business as usual where engineers design army tanks
Still, it's business as usual in clubs where men don't let women in
Surely, it's business as usual has gotten to be worse thean original sin
Don't let business as usual turn you into a slave
Don't let business as usual lay you in your grave
Don't let business as usual support apartheid even one more day
Don't give business as usual any chance to blow this world away
We've got too many brothers and sisters in dank, dirty prisons
For speaking their minds where that's considered a crime
We've got too many money-takers putting off decisions
making up excuses that never have any reason or rhyme
We've got too many puppets telling us those seeking visions
Of FREEDOM and PEACE are only fools being duped one more time
It's time those who pull the puppet strings stop playing their heartless game
Of WE-DON'T-VALUE-NOTHING, 'less it really, really sells
It's time we stop pointing fingers at one another, casting blame
Like peas to be found under three shifting shells
It's time those who rule according to Fortune and FLAME
Finally had to share this world with everybody else
(Chorus)
Still, it's business as usual...
We're getting really tired of all the crafty evasions
Employed by the boys who own the Bohemian Grove
We're getting really tired of all the separate nations
Treating foreign folks like wood that can be stuffed into a stove
We're getting really tired of all the fabrications
Used to tell us how it's all been planned by Jupiter, by JOVE
And now, we're getting ready to tear down each and every fence
Used to corral us and market us like cattle
Yes, now, we're getting ready to give lie to all the pretense
Used to divide us, deride us, and send us off to battle
Right now, we're getting ready to dispatch apartheid forever hence
We won't give up the struggle, until we hear it's death rattle!
(Chorus)
Still, it's business as usual...
Before we spend billions and billions on particle beams
I Pray We Will Discover we've no right to kill for peace
Before we rend this earth with mad scientists' schemes
I Pray We Will Discover indifference is a real disease
Before we descend into a hopeless hell, completely devoid of dreams
I Pray We Will Discover
the only cure for the will to WAR
the only cure for the will to WAR
the only cure for the will to WAR
IS the will to PEACE
It's the will to PEACE
The only cure for the will to WAR
IS the will to PEACE
