Story Behind the Song
I was sittin' around wonderin' just how many times must the cannonballs fly before they're forever banned, and resenting the hell out of the Enron administration's arrogation to themselves of war powers as the twenty-first century version of circuses as it relates to oil as the twenty-first century version of bread, and decided that I had a hammer and I was going to ring my bell all over this land; your land, and my land.
Or God inspired me, I'm not sure which.
It took about twenty minutes to write after sitting on the idea of "A dragon pinned down in the desert" since 1992. I figured eventually there would be another one.
Lyrics
{verse 1}
Lonesome and beat-up and bleary,
I flopped beside my dog down on a bench.
Wore-out and wasted and weary,
I couldn't move another inch;
when I fell asleep and saw every nation;
people, and tribe down to a man;
gathered at the cradle of civilization,
just as if it were all planned.
They were marchin' southeast from a sea of glass,
right where old Bagdad used to stand,
then the trumpets all ceased,
there was a moment of peace,
before it all hit the fan!
There was a dragon pinned down in the desert,
there was a lion looking coyly at a lamb,
and last but so least some unspeakable beasts,
were butchering in Bethlehem.(Mmmh-hmmh-mmh)
{chorus}
The ghosts of Cain and Able, are goin' at it still today;
killin' their brother 'cause their father liked the other;
best, at least that's what they say
down on the Jerusalem road-yeah
the Jerusalem road woah-oh..
ya' better pray for the peace of the stones of the street,
they carry such a heavy load,
down on the Jerusalem road, yeah
the Jerusalem road!
{verse 2}
Then I woke up and picked up a paper,
from the ground to wrap around me for the cold,
when the headlines screamed at me so I started to read,
and Lord, a chill ran through my soul...
it said that-The ghosts of Cain and Able
are goin' at it still today,
Killin' their brother 'cause their father liked the other,
best, at least that's what they say,
down on the Jerusalem road.
{tag ad infinitum and fade}
Yeah, the Jerusalem road.
That damned old Jerusalem road.
Don't go down the Jerusalem road.
Woa-oh-oh Jerusalem road.
Whistle past that old Jerusalem road.
Mmm-hmmh-mmh Jerusalem road.
