Story Behind the Song
David began writing this song by playing around with an Am9 chord and he decided he wanted to write something based around that. The song just developed by itself and David didn't really have a story in mind until the middle of the 2nd verse, at which point everything just fell into place.
Lyrics
1ST VERSE
Walking down a lonely street, in weariness I dragged my feet
And chanced upon a girl I'd like to meet again
Walked her down Fifth Avenue and asked her for her point of view
And everything she said just sounded true to me
1ST CHORUS
Oh, how I longed for her embrace
How I longed to touch her face
How I yearned to feel the warmth of her
Oh, but I couldn't make her stay
So I let her walk away
Now I'm alone again
2ND VERSE
Sitting watching MTV when suddenly she came to me
And all my waking dreams were instantly so real
Her eyes could surely melt the coldest heart, the youngest to the oldest
Start to feel a flame within them hold again
2ND CHORUS
Oh, I had nothing left to hide
She could see me deep inside
She could see the very heart of me
Oh and she made me feel afraid
But I still wish that she'd stayed
Now I'm alone again
MIDDLE 8
All alone, on my own and nowhere left to go
I gotta find that girl, she's gotta be my world
I've gotta let her know
3RD VERSE
I would wake most every night, think of her till dawn's first light
She'd be in my dreams but outta sight to me
I would search the streets so I could find the one I can't shake from my mind
But fate would never be that kind to me
3RD CHORUS
Oh, I have given all my life
Still it cuts me like a knife
Still I think you might be lonely too
Oh, so I'm on my knees to pray
But I got nothing left to say
Now I'm alone again
Now I'm alone again
Now I'm alone again
