For SATB chamber choir and string quartet. This performance comes from the "Essentially Choral" reading sessions held in Minneapolis on January 18th, 2003 by Vocal Essence under the direction of Philip Brunelle. It's important to note that this is a reading session. What that means is, after a short rehearsal, the piece is "performed". This is for purposes of education for the composer as well as the ensemble. So, the resultant performance is FAR from perfect, in fact they are essentially sight reading the piece. But, you should be able to get the overall feel for the piece from this performance.

    Lyrics
    Though we think of life
    As a vale of misery
    A bitter trial
It is not as if we were birds
    Who can simply fly away.

    A very goddess
    Whom the mountains and rivers
    Unite in serving
She is rowed forth in her boat.

    On nights when rain falls
    Mingling with the blowing wind
    On nights when snow falls
    Mingling with the pouring rain
I must cry in weak voices.

    I have no choice
    But to endure the cold.

The morning star announced the dawn
A mighty wind caught us helpless.
It is not as if we were born human beings
    Who can simply fly away.

    -Yamanoue no Okura (660-733)
