Story Behind the Song
motivation for the song-
I was inspired-
where the song was written-
my back porch-
how long it took to write-
about 4 days-
how long to record-
about 3 hours-
how many takes-
about 3
-what the lyrics mean-
-verse 1*she (the fortune teller)came down from Little Paris(a place in Vietnam-North of
what used to be Saigon)with Flyin' Stars
(a system of Feng Shui) and candied lotus
(sugared lotus seeds)-
she had found the perfect place to teach the Pillars of thier fate(pillars-a reference to the 4 pillars of destiny-a system of Feng Shui)
-verse2*went down to Vung Tau for some rest, with a bindin' his crest, saw a room with silk
and lace and paper roses in a vase
-chorus*how far from the handle(how far from the handle of the tea cup, the farther the leaves fall from the handle of the cup, the
farther off and more unexpected the event
in question will occur)wondered if she'd know the answer, how far from the handle,
soldier and the fortune teller-
-payoff*said to her can you read the leaves,
who was born for lovin' me, how far from the handle, how long will it be?(how long before I meet the love of my life?)-
-verse3*she held his palm within her hand(palm reading)to see just how his heartline(a line in the palm that tells about the love-life)ran, union line(a line in the palm that
tells about the love life)was fallin' down
(when the union line is curving downward,
it's not a good thing) with breaks and islands all around (breaks and islands-not a good thing)(basically, the current relationship or the status of his lovelife
at the time of the question is not good)-
-verse4*then saw HER(the love of his life to be)
in the moon and stars(moon-symbol of water,
maternity, emotions)and stars(stars-hope,
wishes, surprises), a baby cradled in the dark, far across the ocean miles, it's gonna be a long long while(she tells him
although things aren't too good in his love
life at the time of the question, there is
a little baby overseas that will grow up and fall in love with him)-
-bridge*someday he will notice her, singin' like
a lonely love bird, she will love him at
first sight, somehow it will turn out right-
-tag*how far from the handle-she blew out the candle, then she said , far from the handle.
