    Story Behind the Song
I wrote the first verse and sat on it for 6 months before the rest of the song came. For one whole summer I had a best friend that I loved more than life, but then fall came around and he was too important for me. I still don't think I've ever really forgiven him, I guess I should, huh?

    Lyrics
The more salt the wound gets
the harder to ignore it is
    subtle grief surfaces sometimes
    Opening the tidal gates
pain washed up the shore again
    breaking all your sympathies apart
I loved you in the shadows
    in the mists of California
When I was just a girl
and you were taller than you seemed
    Only silver linings shone
    you were so attainable
But now your handsome face blocks out
the clouds I used to dream
I wait around for you to remember
for your clever hands to pull me from the mess I've made
When will you realize that this is all your fault?
and take all this responsibility from me
    Breaking waves and sinking sands
    tender hearts and aching hands
Walking on the water so I know this isn't real
Blanket stars and untoughed dunes and holy staring silent moons
never really knowing how the night's supposed to feel
I left you in the shadows in the mists of California
no longer just a girl and you're a coward I believe
Where did the silver linings go?
somewhere far where I don't go...
And now your face is buried, oh, beneath some salty sea
Still I wait, around for you to remember
for your clever hands to pull me from the mess I've made
When will you realize that this is all your fault?
and take all this responsibility from me
