Here's proof that we're just not a hit-em-over-the-head-style band. While we can swing hot and stomp with the best of them, we also have our tender side, displayed perfectly on this Hoagy Carmichael classic. It's only three choruses, but they tell a story. Carmichael's melody is one of the most beautiful ever created, so the piano doesn't even have to deviate much from it to get the point across. The second chorus though was performed with the looming figure of Lester Young in mind. The tenor saxophonist never recorded this song, but his influence haunts almost everything we perform, including this one. |
