    Story Behind the Song
Ed Sullivan's studio audience way back in '64.

    Lyrics
We used to wrap those terry capes around our necks like Superman.
We swung from ropes like jungle apes with puny pecs and old Tarzan.
leaping from our treehuts, sailing through the air,
until that night they swept our hearts away
and everything just slipped between the cracks
    reeling on that newborn holiday,
the night we heard those Beatlemaniacs.

We left our capes for broom guitars and tin-pan drums when we were ten.
To forty-fives by AM stars with manic strums we'd sing and then...
reflecting from our mirrors, was every mother's son.
    reeling since that newborn holiday
when everything just slipped between the cracks,
    rocking like a moptop protege
    screaming like those Beatlemaniacs.

    and the days flew by,
just like sand grains through a glass,
    with dreams held high,
till the end when all things must pass.

I hang each memory on my wall beside my rickenbacker bass
each framed in glass I still recall, reflecting back this aging face
smiling back in wonder, innocent and free,
ever since they swept our hearts away
and everything just slipped between the cracks,
    reeling since that newborn holiday
the night we heard those Beatlemaniacs.

We left our capes for broom guitars and tin-pan drums when we were ten.
