Story Behind the Song
I was playing in the Rector St. station in the NYC Subway. A love song I was singing turned the head of a very pretty woman, and I wrote this song as an exploration of falling in love with someone I'd never see again. Recorded in one take.
Lyrics
You've seen me singing these love songs in the station,
And songs about a workin' man just trying to survive.
As the busy crowds went rushing by you chanced to stop and listen,
But the train is coming to pick you up and in a moment you'll be gone.
Now people need a song here in the station,
But with times so tough it's hard to make them smile,
And although you may be weary, I sure hope that you can hear me,
'Cause I've got something to say to you and I don't have too much time.
I've got eighty five seconds to tell you that I love you.
Just one look into those lovin' eyes and I knew it from the start.
But I've got eighty five seconds to tell you that I love you,
Before that subway train arrives and you leave here with my heart.
Now I love to bring my guitar to the station,
And when I sing this love song it's for you and you alone.
So when the steel wheels come to take you,
You'll know my love goes with you,
And when your gone I'll pray the Lord will lead you safely home.
I've got eighty five seconds to tell you that I love you,
And I want to let you feel the things I'd do if I could hold you in my arms.
I've got eighty five seconds to tell you that I love you,
'Cause when that subway train arrives you're gonna leave here with my heart.
