Story Behind the Song
The song is about someone I will always miss. What it comes down to is that I blew it...I thought I was helping her by getting rid of me...I hurt us both.
Bittersweet took two days to write and lay down with actual recording happening at an hour most people use for sleep. It's amazing what you can do at 2:30 in the morning with an acoustic guitar and a computer...when you just have to get something out of your system. The guitar is the second take on a Martin DCX1E with dead strings plugged into my PC through a Boss Chorus Ensemble. I added flanger during post, then doubled the track, offset it slightly to make it fuller and pulled the balance on the second track to one side. All vocals are mine pushed through a Shure AXS 2. I added delay to bring the presence up on the lead vocals, then doubling the track and offsetting. Backup vocals are all doubled and offset as well as getting a compliment of bells and whistles. All this mess makes for a total of about ten tracks.
I have to admit this is all experimental. I've been learning by doing. This is the only program I've ever used for music editing. and I haven't actually even read the manual...now that I think about it, I'm not sure I have one...
Lyrics
You are my past, you are memories, bittersweet
A look in the mirror, and all I see is emptiness
As we said good-bye, and I drove away
I never knew a cut so deep as when I watched you cry
But it makes no difference, no, not anymore
Not since I pushed you away
Yours was a heart abandoned and mine was a soul adrift
In a tide that tore me away from that I loved
Hmmm, and how I loved you
You I have surrendered, you I have so wronged
And yours is a love Ill never know again,
all Ive loved is all Ive lost
So Im gonna drift away, Im gonna hang head in tempered shame
Cause youre always there to remind, me cause youre always on my mind
Yours was a heart abandoned, and mine was a soul adrift
In a tide that tore me away from that I loved
Hmmm, and how I loved you
You I have surrendered, you I have so wronged
But it makes no difference, no, not anymore
Not since I pushed you away
Yours was a heart abandoned, and mine was a soul adrift
In a tide that tore me away from that I loved, that I loved
You are my past, you are memories bittersweet
