    Story Behind the Song
Touching, inspiring story of American reporter hero who stood for love, truth, and humanity (and played a great bluegrass fiddle), lost in the early stages of the War On Terror, not long after 9-11.

    Lyrics
    THE BALLAD OF DANNY PEARL

He was kind and gentle, he was everyone's friend.
He was smart, funny, focused from beginnin' to the end.
He just wanted to communicate the world,
And his name was Danny Pearl.

From Bombay to Paris he reported on the news,
Meetin' every kind of person, tellin' everybody's view
In the biggest newspaper in the world.
    Life's work for Danny Pearl.

    chorus:

You may not wanna hear it but there's killers on the loose.
They always got a grievance and it's always an excuse.
They hate love, they wanna kill the world.
They reminded us with Danny Pearl.

Well he had an old fiddle an' he sure could play.
Had a pretty wife who loved him and a baby on the way.
But he wanted to improve their world,
    Bridge-builder Danny Pearl.

So he traveled to Karachi where he followed on the trail
Of the sleazy sneaker-bomber who had ended up in jail
    from Pakistan's wild east whirl.
For his story went Danny Pearl.

    (chorus)

Teemin' rough crowds and old dark streets.
Yet he'd been tough places and he didn't miss a beat.
But though he checked his contacts well,
It was a trap for Danny Pearl.

They tortured him bad, put a gun to his head.
Then they chained him up and told him he'd be better off dead.
The cry went out around the world:
"Spare the life of Danny Pearl!"

    chorus:

You may not wanna hear it but there's killers on the loose.
They always got a grievance and it's always an excuse.
They hate love, they wanna kill the world.
    They resumed with Danny Pearl.

Don't let your kids hear, cos it ain't too nice.
Them pigs sliced Danny in a human sacrifice.
    For their final animal thrill
They took the head of Danny Pearl.

Because he was American, because he was a Jew.
They're Jihad Nazis, terror primitives too.
But his love spread all around the world,
    Last work of Danny Pearl.

    chorus:

No matter what you do they're gonna hate you still.
When they only wanna kill you, then it's kill or be killed,
    Til Freedom transforms their world.
And we remember it with Danny Pearl.
