Story Behind the Song
Originally, this piece was written for the music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia entitled "For Music's Posterity," and it was designated for men's chorus and Brass Quintet. I then went back to the piece after a few years and wanted to revise it for a more universal message, a feeling of patriotism and nationalism. After the events of 9/11, I knew this was exactly the message the piece needed to tell-- one of a nation rising from the smoldering ashes and uniting to triumph over the darkest of enemies. It's a story that makes movies, but the reality of the situation is overwhelmingly emotional and now leads us from a feeling of loss to a renewed sense of Thanksgiving, unity and dignity amongst one another.
Lyrics
Lyrics to "For Music's Posterity"
--fits with the last few minutes of "America, the Free":
Men of Song, singing joyfully,
spreading music for the cause;
bringing voices, hearts,
and hands of strength,
joining all to make one in song!
Here we stand, joining all in hand,
for music's royal call;
Hearts in unison, and our voices free,
fighting all for one, one for all!
Harmony, blessing all of thee,
reaching mankind's tuneful ear,
striving faithfully to bring unity,
saving Orpheus from doubt and fear!
(five purposes of Sinfonia spoken)
Men of Song, singing joyfully!
Here we stand for Music's Posterity!
