    Story Behind the Song
I got the idea for Whiskey Wise and Shotgun Mad when a friend was told me how he used to get in fights when he was drunk. He used the phrase, "whiskey-wise", and I immediately recognized it as a great hook for a song. I added and "Shotgun Mad" part and the chorus was pretty much complete. I struggled with the verses for years. I finally decided to move into a minor version of the same melody. I had the bridge all done “Then I heard about a man…” but I had the tune changing into a half-time thing. I was not happy with it so I asked my friend Richard Marx, to help. He just changed the melody a little and it was a keeper.

    Lyrics
    Whiskey wise and shotgun mad
You’ve never seen anyone quite so bad
Everybody says I was raised from Hell
    ‘Cause I’m my daddy’s son
    I’m my daddy’s son

I was left in charge while my daddy mined
Man of the house and barely nine
A man came by and treated Momma bad
And I was too young to help

    Whiskey wise and shotgun mad
You’ve never seen anyone quite so bad
Everybody says I was raised from Hell
    ‘Cause I’m my daddy’s son

Well the law never took my daddy alive
He held ‘em off so as I’d survive
So I could kill that wicked man
    And avenge my family

Then I heard about a Man Who paid an even greater debt
So perfect in His innocence the world could not forget
So willingly He gave His life that all men might be free
Now I must trade forgiveness for this vengeful hate in me

Now whiskey wise and shotgun mad
You’re never gonna see me again like that
‘Cause if I forgive that wicked man
    I can be forgiven too
    I’ll be forgiven too
