A song about the artificial privatisation of natural monopolies |
CD: Now That the Empire's Over
Label: to be released
Credits: Phil Davies, copyright 2003 |
Story Behind the Song
Written as the Conservative government was launching its disastrous privatisation of Britain's railways. "Crypto-communist" was Margaret Thatcher's insult to Labour Party leader Neil Kinnock for opposing the privatisations.
Lyrics
FREE COMPETITION
Millions of souls deluded that the rain was free
And there was lots of good drinking water to make your tea
And then one day they made a new law
You had to have ten water pipes leading to your door
Free competition, it's the name of the game
Free competition for electricity
I got ten consumer units, one for each company
And when I get home on a winter's night
I check the closing shares before I turn on the light
Free competition, it's the name of the game
Free competition between my telephones
The blue one for my baby, the red one to ring Mrs. Jones
Free competition, bulldozers start to roll
They're laying ten gas pipes in parallel along the road
Free competition in the railways will be nice
So bye-bye buy British Rail at a knockdown price (knockdown, knockdown)
So they knocked down all the factories and the houses too
To build three new railway stations next to Waterloo
Free competition, it's the name of the game
Free competition every time it rains
Freedom for little raindrops to have their choice of private drains
Free competition, bulldozers start to roll
Millions of souls deluded that things are all under control
Millions of souls deluded that the earth was round
And we'd better take good care of this sacred ground
And then they decided that the earth was flat
And only a crypto-communist could disagree with that
Free competition, it's the name of the game
