Story Behind the Song
this song was motivated by the increasing pressure to knuckle under to evangelical, fundamentalist capitalism. It was recorded on a four-track tape deck, at the end of a tape with two other songs on it, and was cut short because i was running out of tape. now that i'm working in digital 12-track, i hope to put out a long version soon.
the chorus, "OM VAJRAPANI HUNG" is in praise of the Buddha who purifies us through extreme situations.
Lyrics
look what's happenin' on the street
got the revolution, got the revolution
1968 was great
got the revolution, got the revolution
i was there ashberry and haight
got the revolution, got the revolution
and it will come as no surprise
got the revolution, got the revolution
I learned to see the world through magic eyes
got the revolution, got the revolution
got to see behind the scenes
got the revolution, got the revolution
got to glimpse what meaning means
got the revolution, got the revolution
saw where greed and anger led
got the revolution, got the revolution
took another road instead
got the revolution, got the revolution
like so many of my kind
got the revolution, got the revolution
touched the heart of wisdom mind
got the revolution, got the revolution
made a vow i'd always be
got the revolution, got the revolution
a magic revolutionary
we walked right in
we sat right down
we let our minds roll on
turned the angels and the demons loose
we let them have their fun
we took on all comers in our youthful pride
tryin’ to break on through to the other side
we did magic in the hills
we did magic in the city
we were stormin’ heaven
we were shown no pity
many fell dead or wounded from within
years sped by, our ranks grew thin
when I set out to save the world
victory seemed so certain
nothing between me and paradise
but the flimsiest of curtains
now we’re rockin’ on the edge of hell
but I have learned my lessons well
i will not give up what i know
no matter what wind may blow
i pledge that i will always be
a magic revolutionary
