Story Behind the Song
For the past several months, I have been attempting to put a band together, and have been working unders several handicaps. One of those handicaps is that I want to work with people that 1) have some musical talent, 2) have technical proficiency with their instrument(s), are reasonably dependable, 3) willing to make a committment both to the band and to the music that represents a departure from the everyday, 4)aren't hopelessly addicted to either drugs or alcohol, 5) aren't carrying around a lot of mental "baggage", 6)have their egos under control, and 7) are available. Is that asking too much? Apparently it is, as most people with those qualifications have all the work they can handle. Even though I slightly relaxed my standards into a more realistic, I was just short a bass player, and almost got lucky with a good player whose most recent band of some six years had just broken up. He was a good player, liked the music, needed the additional income that weekend gigging would provide. But the only thing he would commit to was a two hour Jazz radio show that he DJ's on the local college radio station. He wouldn't commit one way, or the other. I was getting very frustrated, but at the same time I recognized in him a characteristic that is rampant in our society: most people seem to be unwilling to make decisions and committments. So thats the story of the motivating birth of this song. Where the music and melody lines came from, I just conjured them out of thin air. The lyrics were roughed out as well as the basic song structure and melody in about an hour and a half. I don't recall for sure how long it took me to record but believe it was similar to many of my songs that I recorded in a marathon session of 24 to 30 hours straight.
Lyrics
You’re Either In Or You’re Out
© 2003 by Bill McClarty – all rights reserved
You can’t do things just half way things never would get done.
I think you better make your choice, while you still have one.
Your clock just keeps on ticking. There’s only so much time.
And none for indecision, so you better clear your mind.
And don’t start in complaining, It’s just a waste of air.
.Nobody wants to listen, and nobody really cares.
There’s no more time for questions, there’s no room left for doubt.
You’re either in, or you’re out.
Don’t worry about failing, Just get on with your task.
You’ll never find the answers, If you’re too afraid to ask.
I won’t sit and wait for you to make up your mind.
Each moment that you hesitate, The more you fall behind.
If you never start the journey, You won’t get anywhere.
And if the truth’s too hard to face, you’ll never make it there.
Tell me the road you want to take, You have to choose a route.
You’re either in or you’re out.
No grudges or hard feelings, Whatever you decide.
But don’t complain of failing, if you never really tried..
Whatever road you travel, there’s a price that you must pay.
But I know that you’ll feel better, Once you’re on your way.
Don’t wait another minute, throw off your clinging fear.
Or your choices may just fade away, and never reappear.
You better tell me now, Your time has just run out.
You’re either in or you’re out.
That’s right, you’re either in, or you’re out…. Going or coming.
How can you claim a mileage deduction when you don’t go anywhere.
Look, trying a different spice in your spaghetti sauce does not constitute a major adventure.
You’re worse than my cats. They don’t know if they want to be inside, or outside.
I refuse to be their doorman, and I’m not going to be yours…. So what’s it going to be? Are you in or are you out?
