failure of nerve? or the decency not bruise old wounds? there are times in our lives when we can choose our future...and failing to choose is a choice

    Story Behind the Song
this was inspired by events in my own life, though it doesn't exactly describe what's going on here. I wrote it all at once. this simple, understated version was nearly a first take

    Lyrics
    ALMOST TALKED ABOUT IT
    By Martin Holsinger

I brought you bags of groceries
    On a winter afternoon
And though I was in a hurry
And said I’d be leaving soon
You shared a cup of tea with me
And asked me what was new

    We talked about the weather
And the kids and ‘bout your ma
    We talked about the government
    And ‘bout our gardens too
But as I rose to leave you there
Deep in my heart I knew
That once again we hadn’t talked
The way we used to do

    Chor:
And I almost talked about it
Yes I almost talked about it
    Almost talked about the thing
That we don’t talk about no more
But I didn’t talk about it
No I didn’t talk about it
Just said goodbye and kept my smile on
As I walked on out your door

    Now we don’t get together
Quite the way we used to do
And I’ve been there with someone else
Since I was there with you
I’m not the man you used to know
That kind of makes me glad
    But something’s lost between us
I feel it, and feel sad

    Chor.

    I almost talked about it
    Will I ever open up?
And would you open if I did
Or would you just stay shut?
I’m afraid to lose what’s left of us
If I speak from my heart
I’m afraid you’ll smile at me and say
    “Let’s make a brand-new start.”

    Chor.

Will I ever talk about it?
Well you know I kind of doubt it
The feeling fades a little further
Every time that I say “no”
Will I ever talk about it?
Well you know I kind of doubt it
My heart just grows a little colder
Every time that I say “no”
My heart just grows a little colder
Every time that I say “no”
