Story Behind the Song
In the 1970s, when we launched Voyager 1 & 2, it was realized that these would be the first relics of humanity to ever leave the Solar System (outpacing even Pioneer 10 & 11). It was essentially the ultimate time capsule. Recognizing the symbolic & spiritual significance of this opportunity, a small team of academics compiled an incredible mix of photographs & songs from around the world (titled, "Murmurs of Earth"), and mounted the collection on the outside of both Voyager probes in the form of a golden record. One of the criticisms the team received, however, is that, of the 117 photographs included, depicting an extraordinarily diverse collection of life, not a single one depicted weapons or war.
In the end, the face we presented to the Universe was falsified & superficial. This song doesn't lobby necessarily for the opposite position, but rather it uses the debate as an interesting platform to reflect on humanity. It is an interesting exercise to ask yourself if they chose wisely or not. Is it uplifting that they clung to an ideal or depressing that they hid our cobwebs by misrepresenting civilization?
Lyrics
Assemble
A photo album
Of laughter
Love and culture
Send it to the stars
Strapped to
A satellite
Intended to
Find other life
Will they want to hear from us?
Put your
Best foot forward
Salesmen
Evangelizing,
"This is what humanity is
This is what humanity is
This is all humanity is"
Pious
Righteous
No mention
Of mushroom clouds
Or 'defense'
400 billion
Preposterous
How could they understand?
Parents
Always see right through
A white lie
Perhaps they will too
This is what humanity is
This is what humanity is
This is all humanity is
Pious
Righteous
Our resumes
Our blind dates
Dress-up Sundays
Our karaoke
