As bombs rain down on Baghdad, local musicians team up with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bernie Worrell to record a powerful message against war.
Come In Out of the Rain was originally recorded at the time of the Vietnam War by Parliament, pioneers of the 1970s Funk and Soul movement.
Worrell says, “ Weve been doing this for thirty years and now we’re reinventing it with the next generation, bringing the funk forward and trying to get the message out to the people so they can hear.”

Story Behind the Song
As bombs rain down on Baghdad, local musicians team up with Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bernie Worrell to record a powerful message against war.
As President Bush addressed the nation to declare war, two generations of musicians gathered in a studio in the redwoods of Northern California and recorded a new version of the classic 1970’s anti-war anthem, Come In Out of the Rain.
The song was originally recorded by Parliament, pioneers of the 1970’s Funk and Soul movement. The song was on the 1972 American release, Rhenium, in which Worrell played on and that hit during the Vietnam War. Worrell, almost 60 and still one of the hardest working musicians in the business exclaimed, “ We’ve been doing this for thirty years and now we’re reinventing it with the next generation, bringing the funk forward and trying to get the message out to the people so they can hear.”
“We wanted to bring together a diverse selection of talented musicians that we have worked with around here to give this cool song a new twist and get the message out to the world, again,” says producer and president of In the Pocket Productions, Tony Mindel. In the Pocket is a music label and production company which is dedicated to the development of the new Northern California sound and talent. “What better way to promote peaceful solutions than through music.”
Youthful and talented lead singer Samantha Stollenwerck states, “ Beside 9/11, I have never experienced an event of this magnitude so personally, I really didn’t know what to do. Somehow we all gravitated towards this song and the cool thing is that we did a whole new take on it. I am starting to feel a certain responsibility as an artist to contribute a positive message through my music.” Bernie Worrell brought his crazy wisdom and unflappable funky keyboards to this newest version of the song. He set the stage and Samantha stepped up and belted out the powerful lyrics.
Eenor, current guitarist of Les Claypool’s Frog Brigade offered a soaring guitar solo reminiscent of seventies space funk. Brian Clahan from local band, The Fingers, gave the song a new tempo on the drums. Other members included members of Moroccan funk band Hamsa Lila with Vir McCoy on Bass and singers Nikila Badua and Andrea Vecchione. Jordan Feinstein backed the track with some soulful organ licks.
“The message in this song seems more relevant than ever, “ Mindel concludes. “ These are heavy times for all of us, you know… at the end of the session, Bernie pulled me aside and said to me straight up, “Here we go again, same old stuff, it’s up to you and your generation to learn, we’re still learning, but we gotta do it now, the president is talking ‘bout change, but nobody’s got sense to come in out of the rain.”
