4 minutes of bittersweet post-punk drive, rattled off on a meaty baritone guitar. Buzzcocks tunefulness and passion meets with Yo La Tengo guitar histrionics. |

Story Behind the Song
This track is a nostalgic piece about a flat I used to live in with my then girlfriend. We really believed in “love on the dole” and were happy scraping by for quite a time. We had two cats enough money for clothes, food and the odd Beck’s. Ultimately it couldn’t last, but the song is a sort of yearning for a more innocent time.
The song was rattled off in one rainy afternoon, more or less in one take. The monotone synth line came from an old Wasp synthesizer, which had got stuck playing just that one note and nothing else! Fortunately, the note fitted the key of the song!
Lyrics
L'Amour sous le Toit
If you swing your ass, my mind will follow
I remember well your sailor suit with the ruffled skirt
Do you remember when we had a summer?
We caught the sun on our bleached white behinds
Two true believers in love on the dole
A moral highground, we just loved being
The young hip couple in the upstairs flat
With the second hand sofa and the beautiful cat
Could you take me back, put back the pieces?
You say you don't know how,
But would you try sometime?
Someone back home who really loves you
But if I do too
Then that makes Tootoo
Do you remember that like I do?
The young hip couple in the upstairs flat
With the second hand sofa and the beautiful cat
