Story Behind the Song
This one started to come to me as I walked along a beach on the North Norfolk coast sometime back in 1997. It was winter and the sun shone brilliantly. I had one of those moments you're really only meant to get when you're on drugs or in India or both! It suddenly seemed as if everything was "one" including myself. Of course daily life kicks back in at some point, you can’t always be in state of revelation, but I was grateful to have had that moment, bordering on a very pleasant insanity.
I'm awful for just screwing up when I try to record and I think the rhythm guitar lines (there are two across the stereo spread) took me quite a few takes. The vocals were done in one take. You can hear a slight distortion on a couple of the higher notes if you listen carefully, but I wasn't going to let that get in the way of a moment where I really had the feeling.
Lyrics
Illumination
Alone again that winter, a single figure on a beach
Beneath the cliffs, between the waves,
The sun warmed me through three layers of freezing clothes
My body, at once receptive to its rays
Reached out with all its feeling
Illuminated first time that day
No opium or lovers touch
Mantra to chant or psalm to sing
Look to the blue horizon, beyond to universal things
All matter subdividing, re-integrating once again
This was not madness but the clearest sight had ever come to...
Let me be LOVE and LIGHT
Absorbing, emanating, reflecting, generating
I will not, cannot change the world
I won't begin to understand
Acceptance of limitation
Will not prevent a look beyond
To those who revel in darkness
What day did your nihilism win?
So I cry carpe diem,
Carpe diem until this one...
Let me be LOVE and LIGHT
Absorbing, emanating, reflecting generating
A passion ever burning
The cold and filth of England's land
Though many would be my teacher
In this moment I was my own
God mentor and receiver
Of this gift all mine to give
To give and to receive love
This will be the essence
'Til this one life passes.
