Story Behind the Song
I wrote this song in praise of God's awesome love and the undeserved faithfulness He gives to each of us. It's so hard for us as humans to align our own wills with the will of God, and daily I'm confronted with the conflict of self. I want to do what I want to do, and I don't want to listen to God, and I don't want to praise God, and yet, God places the desire to love and praise Him inside me, so I can conquer myself and my selfish needs. There is so much about God that I cannot write, and I cannot understand. This song deals with that conflict as well. It's a fairly simple song, and I love what the guys in my band were able to do with it.
Lyrics
*verse 1*
how do i need You?
"i love you" is just a phrase
the stars sit surrounding You
crowning You with the fire that comes from Your gaze
the Spirit You give is my breath of life
hopeless i stopped, breathless i watched as You pulled my wrist out from under the knife
*refrain*
You -- You're in my blood
closer than skin, closer than within
Your beautiful face fills the empty space
as i glance to somewhere above
to Your perfect love
*verse 2*
how can i thank You?
my debt cannot be repaid
my soul longs to worship You
my flesh laughs defiantly and spits on Your grave
You alone can quiet the angry voice
purge the guilt, crush the walls i've built
deny the consequence of death that came with my choice
*refrain*
*bridge*
sometimes i just want to come home
but i know Your ways are not mine -- they're not my own
the dust on my feet, my heart's steady beat
remind me again that i'm never never alone
*refrain*
*refrain*
