Story Behind the Song
Love, music, liquor, unemployment, poverty and hygiene in a God-fearing town with one church, one bar and one piano all in the same whiskey soaked ballad. The only thing better is to hear it live.
The music began as a loose, slobbering country/gospel rockabilly thing, but it changed to a whiskey drunk ballad, the morning after a hard night when I said to my then-girlfriend, "Oh my god, I'll feel much better when the sun goes down." The lyrics fell out that night.
Lyrics
1
I only play the piano
Cause I can’t play guitar
And I only drink at home
Cause I can’t afford the bar
Well I been looking for you baby
On the wrong side of town
But I'll feel much better
when the sun goes down
2
I wear the same shirt
Every night of the week
And a job isn’t something
That's easy to keep
Well I'm too busy drinking
To write a happy song
But I'll feel much better
when the sun goes down
Chorus
When the sun goes down
When the sun goes down
When the sun goes down
When the sun goes down
Everything will be all right
Solo
3
I only wear this hat
Cause I don’t comb my hair
And I act like a fool
Just to watch people stare
Well I know it's hard to love me
When I'm laying on the ground
But I'll feel much better
when the sun goes down
Chorus
