    Story Behind the Song
"Beauty's Bones" is the story of a Beauty, a street-smart woman who falls in love with the beautiful Mandy Moans-in-the-Morning. One night, Beauty finds Mandy with a man and the love story gets complicated.

I was asked by a good friend of mine to write some songs and accompany her at The Lexington Club, a well-known lesbian bar in San Francisco. The character of Beauty is loosely based on her. I first performed the song solo at The Lexington Club following a very late night and morning, and I forgot all the words and ended it in some ridiculous pounding flourish.

    Lyrics
    1
I'll tell you all the story of Beauty
    A long-legged high-heeled lady
She ruled the streets like she was a queen
She was hot and black and mean

Beauty fell in love with a girl
Who was white like a string-of-pearls
    Her name was Mandy Moans-in-the-Morning
She was a curse and she was a blessing

    Chorus
Well I ain't no demon sister
But I ain't no angel too
Before you can walk on me
I'm gonna walk out the door on you

    2
Late one night at The Blue Dog
Full of whiskey and beer and gin
    Beauty saw her lover Mandy
Dancing with a beast of a man

She said, "Papa get your hands off my baby
Papa get your hands off my girl
    Papa you better be careful
Or I'll take you out of this world"

    C Section
Beauty drew a gun from her thigh
There was a struggle and there was a fight
There was a shot and a puddle of blood
And a man laying there on the rug

    3
That was the end of Beauty
    A long-legged high-heeled lady
Her body was hung from an oak tree
When the sun went down on Sunday

    They dug up Beauty's bones
    And put them on display
But bones don’t sing and bones don’t dance
And now we're ugly here everyday
