    Story Behind the Song
The idea for this song came while walking over California street one morning, past many of San Francisco's picture postcard landmarks: the trolley cars, Grace Cathedral, the Fairmount Hotel, and down into Chinatown. The San Francisco Bay Area was in the middle of its capitalist dot-com mire, and I felt like my spirit and the City's spirit was being stolen. "Rise Up" is about rising and falling, and finally climbing up to take your spirit back.

    Lyrics
    1
I saw you on the street Monday
    Lonely & broken down
You were reading the newspaper headlines
Your head bent low to the ground
Bent so low to the ground

    2
You looked much worse than I ever remember
Like a princess losing her crown
I wanted to take your hands with my hands
    And pick you up
Pick you up from the ground

    Chorus
    So rise up little angel
    Rise up from the ground
Rise up like the sun in the morning
    Rise up from the ground

    3
These people 'round here they drink too much
They smoke and they fight and they eat and they cuss
Living alone on these tombstone streets
    Will bring you down
Bring you down to your knees

    Chorus

    C Section
    Bears and misfits
    Freaks & slaves
    Wait for your rise
Like the swell of a wave
You can shiver with the addicts
    And dance with the snakes
    But the smoke will clear
    And the clouds will break

    Solo

    4
It's been seven years since you got here
Where the hills all slump in shame
And though nobody writes about you
The children all sing your name
    All sing your name

    Chorus
