Story Behind the Song
Let me first say that this song was never intended to be made public. It was written in a time of mourning and wrestling with feelings of abject helplessness. A very good friend of mine was killed in an auto accident by a train at an unmarked crossing in Walton, Kentucky. At the time I was twelve hundred miles away, without means to travel, apart from my every friend and family member, alone and so far from home. When the word reached me, I was left to surrender to my own silent fears and thoughts. I wanted so desperately to be there, in Cincinnati, both for her family and to serve my own human need to grieve, but was trapped here, like an inmate, in this foreign land.
Christy Male was one of the finest people I, or anyone, could have had the fortune to befriend. She was kind and she was beautiful. She was a great friend and a perfect daughter and sister. It is for the sake of her continued memory that this song appears before you. The song holds my every shortcoming as a man and as a friend, my every regret, my every everything. I miss her dearly.
"Wreck on Walton" is here for Christy's family and her friends, so that she will not be forgotten, so that her story will be told, at least part of it. It is here because Greg and Cindy Male have given their blessing. Please take the time to listen and to read and to feel. You'll know her as I did, as a true friend to a man who had precious few.

THERE WAS A WRECK OUT ON WALTON HIGHWAY TONIGHT.
NO LIGHTS FLASHED, NO NAMES WAS CALLED.
NO ONE THERE UPON THE SCENE.
THE NEWSMAN HAD NEVER HEARD HER NAME,
BUT SHE WAS A FRIEND OF MINE.
RIGHT OUTSIDE OF DENVER, I AM SERVING TIME.
THE MEN AROUND ME NOW, AT TIMES THEY CRY.
BUT WAY OUT IN THIS FOREIGN LAND, I JUST CAN`T BRING MYSELF TO MOURN
FOR I`M AS EMPTY AS THE IMAGINED SKY.
THE WORD CAME TONIGHT AND STOLE MY BREATH.
LORD I FEEL ALMOST INHUMAN.
I CAN`T SEE NOTHIN, CAN`T FEEL NOTHIN` AT ALL,
BUT I HEAR THEM WORDS CLEARLY RING - HEY MAN SHE`S GONE`.
LORD WHY TONIGHT.
WHAT I WOULDN`T GIVE TO SEE HER LAUGHIN EYES AGAIN.
IF SHE FOUND HER WAY TO HEAVEN, IF THERE REALLY IS A GOD, I`D BE THE LAST TO KNOW
FOR I`M A HOLLOWED MAN NOW SHE`S GONE.
THERE ARE PEOPLE GATHERED IN THE OHIO CHURCH TONIGHT.
MY FAMILY AND ALL MY FRIENDS HANG THEIR HEADS ONCE HIGH.
ME, I`M BEHIND THESE BARS
WISHIN I JUST ONCE WAS THERE FOR HER,
IMAGINING CONVERSATIONS WE MIGHT HAVE HAD.
THERE WAS A WRECK OUT ON WALTON HIGHWAY TONIGHT.
NO LIGHTS FLASHED, NO NAMES TO CALL.
NO ONE THERE UPON THE SCENE.
THE NEWSMAN HAD NEVER HEARD HER NAME
BUT SHE WAS A FRIEND OF MINE.
SHE WAS A FRIEND OF MINE. LORD AND SHE...
