Story Behind the Song
My little cousin Lily has hair so crazy it inspired this silly song. I should point out for Lily's sake that this is not a true story and that I made up the whole thing. The song was originally written as a picture book in verse, then much later I took a crack at adding music to it.
Lyrics
Lily, what's in your hair?
(copyright 2002) Chris Hamilton
Lily ran in with a stain on her dress
A scuff on her shoe and her hair in a mess
She ran past her mother who noticed her rush
She said, "come back young lady. I'll give you a brush"
Mother tried to brush Lily's hair from all angles
But her hair was a big nest of knots and tangles
"Lily, oh Lily what's in your hair?"
"Nothing that wasn't already there."
"I don't believe you, there's something in here.
You've used mustard for shampoo, haven't you dear?"
Lily ran home to clean herself quickly, While playing outside she had met something prickly
She'd suddenly startled a little forest creature
Who defended himself with his identifying feature
Mother noticed the needles sticking out from all sides, Lily just wanted to run and hide
"Lily, oh Lily what's in your hair?"
"Nothing that wasn't already there."
"I don't believe you, there's something in here.
You've scared a porcupine, haven't you dear?"
Lily was getting ready for bed, Her mother kissed her on top of her head
"Good night little dear," she said with a tuck, But Lily's Mother's lips were suddenly stuck!
Lily cried out and her mother did too, "What on earth are we going to do?"
"Lily, oh Lily what's in your hair?"
"Nothing that wasn't already there."
"I don't believe you, there's something in here.
You've used glue for hairgel, haven't you dear?"
A plan was needed for this sticky situation, Lily's hair required some slight alteration
With a quick little snip the two were soon parted
But looking quite different from when this all started
Lily had a bald spot that looked rather weird, But her mom had a new little moustache and beard!
"Lily, oh Lily let's cut your hair"
"You already cut one spot now it's bare."
"We'll have troubles no more if our hair isn't messed"
So Lily and her mother cut off the rest.
"Lily, oh Lily what's in your hair?"
