Story Behind the Song
The "Chablis" is a real motel, off the freeway in northern California, and the owner is from Alabama. I wrote this song one afternoon in a Methodist church in Petaluma, CA. It’s a transitional song, written about leaving one thing for something better. It’s a song about the past, hope, love, pain and the ocean.
Lyrics
1
Nobody told me when I left home
That the days would be too bright and the nights too cold
I find myself in a midnight zone
Then I hear somebody yell, "It's time to go"
2
Back in the days that I loved the most
I'd drive up north along the rocky coast
It was high-heeled boots, perfume and buttered toast
Now I'm living my life on graveyard memories
So I'm leaving the Motel Chablis
Chorus
I'm leaving the Motel Chablis
I gotta leave the past behind
To see in front of me
I'm leaving the Motel Chablis
I opened up my eyes
And the futures all I see
3
We ran down streets with glasses of champagne
Now everyday I wish that it would rain
I'm so god damn sick and tired of all this pain
And there's not much left that I can believe
That's why I'm leaving the Motel Chablis
Chorus
C Section
These rooms are growing colder
Now that I am getting older
And it seems I've lost my passion
And my style is out of fashion
And I don’t wanna be alone
I don’t wanna be alone
I don’t wanna be alone
I don’t wanna be
Alone
Solo
4 - repeat verse 2
Back in the days that I loved the most
I'd drive up north along the rocky coast
It was high-heeled boots, perfume and buttered toast
Now I'm living my life on graveyard memories
So I'm leaving the Motel Chablis
Chorus
Refrain 2
I gotta leave the past behind (x3)
