    Story Behind the Song
This song is probably lyrically my favorite of all that I've written. It's based on the experiences of myself and other people that I have observed along with the marriage metaphor that Paul uses often in his letters, which equates Christ's heavenly relationship to His followers with an earthly marriage between a husband and wife. I wrote it all at once after I found out that one of my friends who had been struggling with God had found and renewed her faith. It was one of the easiest to record -- we recorded it in one take after about three tries. Of the songs I've written so far, I feel God's hand in the writing of this one the most -- after the hundreds of times I've played it, God still speaks to me through these lyrics.

    Lyrics
    mary was lost and hopeless
    a bride without a Groom
she had spent sixteen years with fears of truth
that left her crying in her room

can she play the game to numb the pain?
her love-starved heart can't last much longer
and all the while, she finds it harder to smile
as her hate grows ever stronger

but He was there even then
when she felt no love for any man
and the heart she'd built in sand
came alive with the touch of His hand

and she ran to the arms of her King
He spoke no words but He said everything --
a wedding date set for July,
the joy of living and loving on high

    mary looked lost and lonely
the honeymoon had long since ended
she had made her lies and still she denied
that His love was more than she pretended

her heart was ill-at-ease with insecurities
she sought love in the arms of another
she ignored the cries she heard deep inside
each time she left to go meet with her lover

but could His love forgive all this?
she had spent so much time dead in darkness
but the heart she'd rebuilt in sand
collapsed beneath the weight of His hand

and she ran to the arms of her King
He spoke no words but He said everything --
a love that still remained strong,
the love that was there all along

how can i tell them of the grace of your love?
these words of men, corrupt with sin are not majestic enough

so let me run to the arms of my King
You give me life, You give me everything --
a faith that comes from watching You save,
a love that rose again from the grave

mary, run to the arms of our King
He'll give You life, He'll give You everything --
a faith that always will save,
a love that rose again from the grave

    mary don't turn away . . .
